JVP scotches rumours on dividing country

3 February, 2019

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) alleged that some political elements are spreading baseless rumours that Sri Lanka will be divided in the near future. According to JVP parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti, the JVP had always protected the unity in the country and will not waste its efforts on political drivel.

“The JVP is against separatism” he said, adding that the party is against dividing the country.

“However, we will not fall for such false news,” he said.

Handunnetti likened separatism to, ‘The beggar’s wound of Sri Lankan politics’. “It is not a wound that heals but would constantly reappear,” he said, adding that the public is often fooled by such politicians who spread such rumours. “As long as the public continues to believe these lies, the politicians will continue to fool them,” he said.

The JVP MP accused politicians in the North and the South of talking about dividing the country to increase their voter base. “Neither those in the North nor the South has an issue over it,” he said. “Those who seem to be interested the most are politicians who only harp on racism and think that it is those who make racial speeches that can win votes,” he said.
