Tax on potato imports increased

Following a recommendation by President Maithripala Sirisena, the government has decided to hike the tax on potato imports. According to the decision approved by Minister of Agriculture P. Harrison, the import tax has been increased by Rs. 30 per kilo.

The import tax will now be Rs. 50 per kilo. Government sources said, the decision was made to give greater profits to farmers in the Northern Province and other areas during the potato harvesting season. The revised import tax was imposed Friday, February 1. The tax increase is expected to control imports and increase the prices of local production.
