Ratwatte’s penalty gives CR victory

CR and FC registered a narrow 23-20 win over Navy SC in their Dialog inter club League rugby championship match at Longdon Place yesterday thanks to a penalty put over by Tharinda Ratwatte in the dying minutes of the contest.

The winners collect their points from three tries, two conversions and two penalties as against two tries, two penalties and one conversion as Navy dominated the first half with a 17- 13 lead.

Stephen Sivaraj put CR ahead with a penalty in the third minute but Navy bounced back with a try by Gihan Peter which Thilina Weerasinghe converted to give his team a 7-3 lead.

In the 12 minute Navy were awarded a penalty and Weerasinghe made no mistake to stretch the lead 10-3.

But two minutes later CR number eight Omalka Gunaratne scored an unconverted try making the scores 10-8.

Navy’s Ravin de Silva and CR’s Shehan Dias scored un convertedtries for their respective sides as Navy took a 17-13 lead at half time.

On resumption of the second half Harith Bandara got into the act and scored a try for CR which Tharinda Ratwatte converted.

Ten minutes later Navy equalized 20-20 after Weerasinghe put over a penalty and the match was anyone’s game.

Three minutes before the end Ratwatte sealed the issue for CR with a penalty.
