Following a Supreme Court ruling three sports clubs, Army, Air Force and Police will deploy a foreign player each for the rest of their matches in the on-going Dialog inter club League rugby championship.

The three clubs along with CR and FC were to field foreign players at the tournament but were prevented from doing so following a court ruling based on a petition submitted by rival clubs opposing the presence of overseas players.

Sri Lanka Rugby approved the deployment of foreign players for the four clubs saying they wanted to make the eight team championship more competitive with the aim of enticing the crowds.

Kandy, Havelocks, Navy and CH were against the move to deploy foreign players saying it was unfair as they would not be entitled for the same privilege.

The four teams were higher in the rankings before the start of the tournament and unlike Army, Air Force, Police and CR, they were not entitled to field foreigners.

Meanwhile according to Sri Lanka Rugby, CR will not field any foreign players.

Sri Lanka Rugby hailed the decision of the Supreme Court to permit the deployment of foreign players saying they were justified in their approval to allow the participation of overseas professionals which was challenged in court in November last year.

The eight teams in the tournament have three more matches remaining to play before the top four teams in the table play in two semi finals to decide the two finalists and the ultimate winner of the League title.

Kandy, the defending champions, and Havelocks are the closest contenders. They play their last qualifying match on February 16.
