CH snatch win in scrappy game

17 February, 2019

CH and FC finished off the first round in style by defeating a gallant Army SC side by 24 points (4 tries, 2 conversions) to 22 (4 tries, a conversion) in their Dialog League rugby encounter at the Race Course ground yesterday. With this win CH finished off in third spot in the points table.

Both sides made plenty of mistakes in handling that turned the game into a scrappy affair with neither side making any advantageous moves to bring in the points. However, it was the mistakes that led either side to score as many as four tries each.

Army scored first in the 10th minute when CH were making a move and suddenly centre Adam Gauder intending to kick a grubber sent the ball into the hands of Army’s foreign player Boila who dashed nearly 35 metres to score.

Ashan Bandara scored for Army again and with the conversions missed Army led 10-0. CH scored next when during loose play scrum half Sudam Sooriyabandara found an opening to go through. Maduwantha converted.

Five minutes later Army scored again through Rasika Abeynayake off a forwards move. Gayan Salinda converted to increase their lead by ten points.

CH prop Sathya Ranatunga then made use of his burly build to barge through for a try at the stroke of half time at which point the scores were 17-12 with Army leading.

Just six minutes after the turn around CH scored an opportunistic try when Nimanka Prasad received the ball off a mistake by Army and dashed over 80 metres to score. Maduwantha converted to take the lead 19-17.

Army SC scored again when they won a line-out and Ashan Bandara found the gap and off loaded to Sameera Bulathsinhala who went over. Salinda missed the conversion and Army went ahead again 22-19.

But with time ticking CH managed to score a try by Samuel Maduwantha who failed to convert it but they led 24-22 until the final whistle was blown by referee Priyantha Gunaratne.
