Avishka Perera (120) puts Ananda on the back foot

Avishka Perera stole the honours with 120 in the first innings of Nalanda College on the first day of their 90th Battle of the Maroons match against Ananda College that began at the SSC ground Maitland Place yesterday.

Opening the batting for Nalanda, Perera played confidently stroking the ball to all parts of the ground with authority. This gave Nalanda a total of 269 runs for seven wickets declared in their first innings.

In reply, Ananda were in trouble to finish the day on 52 for four wickets off 15 overs.

Dinesh Samaraweera did the damage claiming 3 wickets for 22 runs to put Ananda on the back foot.

Avishka Perera faced 134 deliveries and hit 17 boundaries during his stay at the crease. He dealt all bowlers with caution and aggression and collected his runs with accurate placing of the ball. This was Perera’s third ton of the season but his first in the big match.

With Perera in the middle Nalanda were well under control of the situation and collected their runs diligently. He reached his fifty off 62 balls and the hundred off 111 balls.

Raveen de Silva was the next highest scorer with 36 runs for Nalanda.

Saviru Bandara and Chamika Gunasekera claimed two wickets each for Ananda.
