Rugby promoter, cricket umpire BK Ramachandran no more

One of the pioneer promoters of junior rugby in Sri Lanka, BK Ramachandran, passed away last week at the age of 80.

A family spokesman said Ramachandran died of a heart attack and his funeral took place in Balangoda. He played for St. Peter’s College and later turned out for CR and FC in the B division tournament.

Also known as BK, he was the only Sri Lankan to hold a licence in rugby refereeing and cricket umpiring.

BK was a man with a good sense of humour and was also a pioneer in the push by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union to introduce the sport in provincial schools. He successfully introduced rugby to several schools in the Uva province.
