A Toxin Free National Fair and Exhibition, promoting the consumption and production of organic-only foods will be held from March 30-April 1.
The exhibition will be held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) and is organised by the National Council of Sri Lanka and the Women’s Development Services Cooperative Society.
Farmers, agro-producers and consumers will participate in the exhibition. Producers involved in organic farming and sustainable development, environmental organisations and related social entities will support the event.
The National Council of Sri Lanka is led by Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero. The Sri Lanka Women’s Development Services Cooperative Society was launched in 1989, in the low income neighbourhoods of Wanathamulla and has now spread across the island with a membership of over 100,000.
The National Council of Sri Lanka is engaged in efforts to raise awareness about the rationale for organic and eco-friendly agricultural practices.
The National Exhibition will aim to develop a market for food products of organic farmers and create a resurgence in the use of organic goods and encourage small and medium scale producers to engage in eco-friendly farming and production methods.
The exhibition will feature food, beverages and indigenous medicines made without using chemicals.
Products to be featured at the exhibition will include rice and other grains, vegetables, dried fish fruits, spices, honey, organic fertilisers, coconut products, sweets, handicrafts, clothes and products made of coconut fiber. Medical clinics, consultation seminars and model gardens will also be featured.
