Sri Lanka to contest mixed badminton

A six-member Sri Lanka badminton team has been selected to play in the Badminton Asia mixed team championship scheduled to be worked off from March 19 to 24 in Hong Kong.

National champion Dinuka Karunaratna and number one seed men’s doubles pair of Buwaneka Gunatilleke and Sachin Dias make up the men’s team while national women’s champion Thilini Hendahewa and runners-up player Kavidi Sirimannage together with third seed Dilmi Dias make up the women’s team. Thilini and Kavidi the number one doubles pair recently won the silver medal at the Nepal International Badminton series. Dilmi Dias is the sister of Sachin Dias and hails from Our Lady of Victories (OLV) Convent, Moratuwa.

All leading badminton countries in the Asian region will compete in this tournament and Sri Lanka will compete against Thailand and Indonesia in their first round matches.

This tournament also gives the Sri Lankans good exposure for the next South Asian Games.

National Badminton coach from Indonesia Tony Wayodi and manager Deepal Madurapperuma will accompany the players.
