Karannagoda at CID again on April 4

31 March, 2019

Former Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda will present himself at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for the fourth time on Thursday (4) this week. He is expected to provide another statement in connection with the Navy abductions case where 11 youth are alleged to have been abducted by a group of naval officers which ran an abduction for ransom racket between 2008 - 2009. Karannagoda has been named as a suspect in the case by the CID.

When the magisterial inquiry into the case was heard before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court last week, lead investigator IP Nishantha Silva, OIC, Gang Robberies Unit of the CID told court that they had sufficient evidence to prove that Karannagoda had knowledge on who abducted the youth, where they were held and what became of them. The OIC said the progress of the investigations will be presented to court on April 9 after obtaining a final statement from Karannagoda this week.

The CID also nabbed several members of the abduction ring including a key suspect who had admitted to abducting several missing youth and transporting them from the Naval prison known as Pittu Bambuwa in Colombo to Gunsite, the last known location of the youth, within the Trincomalee Eastern Naval Command.
