Gunaratne, Shanaka on injury list

Two more Sri Lankan cricketers Asela Gunaratne and Dasun Shanaka have joined the injury list and did not take the field for the Super Provincial one-day cricket tournament which is now in progress at Pallekele and Dambulla.

Shanaka was named for the Dambulla team and is out due to muscular pain while Asela Gunaratna who was back on the field after one year is down with a finger injury. Gunaratna was named for the Kandy team which is captained by Dimuth Karunaratne.

It means both Gunaratne and Shanaka are in doubt for World Cup selection ahead of the April 15 deadline.

Meanwhile Kusal Perera the hard hitting stroke-player who was the match winner in the recent Test series in South Africa is still on the injury list.

Young Lahiru Kumara the paceman who also came back home due to injury after the New Zealand tour is subject to a fitness test on April 20. Two other pacemen Dushmantha Chameera and Nuwan Pradeep are in the Super Provincial tournament and will come under close scrutiny.” We are very confident of selecting the best 15 players for the forthcoming World Cup. Our final target is the Super Provincial tournament.

The players have to play according to their potential during this match series. They have the talent and need to develop their mental discipline and that is more important,” said head selector Ashantha De Mel.

“Getting 30- 40 runs is not enough to build a challenging total and the batsmen should realize their responsibility. Their fitness will also be of paramount importance.”

De also rued the fact that Sri Lanka is lacking in quality spinners.

Meanwhile the fitness of the Angelo Mathews has also come into focus and the batsman says he has no doubts about it.

“I had a good recovery period and my rehabilitation was supported well. I am batting well and already got the chance to play 2 or 3 one-day matches at the Super Provincial tournament,” said Mathews.
