Joes’ record at stake in second round

Wesley College and St. Joseph’s College will herald the second round of the inter-school League rugby Cup championship on April 22 (Monday) at Longden Place in Colombo.

The Joes are the only unbeaten team but to win the title they have to overcome two of their toughest hurdles against traditional rival St. Peter’s College and defending champions Royal College.

Their match against Royal will be on May 4 at the Royal Complex ground and on the following week against the Peterites at Bambalapitiya on May 11.

Royal lost their last first round match against the Peterites and will have to start all over again if they are to get back into contention.

They will come out afresh for the second round against Science College on April 28 which means they will have a good warm-up or reality-check outing before they host the Joes the following week.

What the Joes will have to be most concerned about is that Royal does not lose on their home ground the way other teams do.

The Peterites who are also in the running for the title along with Royal, St.Joseph’s and Isipathana, will come out for the first time in the second round against Trinity College on April 27 at Bambalapitiya.

Overall the Peterites finished the first round with a better track record than the other teams, meaning the have scored the highest number of tries totalling 24 as against 22 by the Joes and conceded the least number of points which stands at 57 compared to Royal’s 59.

The Peterites have also recorded the highest number of match points amounting to 162 from five matches compared to second placed Joes who have 160 from the same number of games.
