Nine year old Dishal Weerasekara of Sri Chandrananda Buddhist College Kandy was one of the youngest exponents at the recently concluded Asian Youth Chess Championship which was held at Citrus Hotel in Waskaduwa. In this tournament 550 participants from 24 nations were in action and Weerasekara made Kandy proud by winning a silver medal.

This young player has done well in chess tournaments earlier where he won the seventh place in the Asian Blitz Chess event and eighth in the Asian Rapid Chess event in the under-10 Open age category.

He was the only player from Sri Lanka who represented the top ten of Asia in the under-10 age group and will represent the island at home in the Commonwealth Chess which will take place in June and also in the World Championship which will be played in China in August.

He is well guided by his school coach CN Galappaththi and personal coach R Kalugampitiya.
