Kurukulasuriya shows his best on water

Giyan Kurukulasuriya emerged the champion skier at the Sri Lanka Water Skiing Championship held at the Discover a Dreamspot Waterski camp in Nainamadama recently. The Qatar based lad performed splendidly in the two rounds to obtain the best average score. This was also his win for the second year running.

Nishan Hettiarachchi who is based in Dubai, finished first runner-up while Dinesh Kosala was the second runner-up.

Competitors from Sri Lanka and overseas enjoyed two days of action and excitement on the Ging Oya river at the Kumudu Valley Resort, the host of Discover where Dreamspot Waterski is located.

This competition attracted competitors from the USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, New Zealand and Belgium. The organizer, Holger Bruemmer from Germany has teamed up with the IWWF Asia and invited a professional judge for Waterski events to ensure fair and firm results during the two days. A total Eight titles were up for grabs in various categories in the two disciplines of trickski and slalom.

The first day saw the Sri Lanka boys, Udesh Mendis, Nishan Hettiarachchi, Dinesh Kosala and Giyan Kurukulasuriya battle for this year’s crown.

BMW Prestige Automobile was the main sponsor of the event.

Sri Lankan water skiing marks another step in the direction of becoming an official full member of the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation.

With Sri Lanka having countless inland waterways and rivers there is potential for this sport to grow in the coming years to large numbers according to Holger Bruemmer.
