Vavunathivu cop murders: Former LTTE cadre released

Former LTTE cadre Kethirgamathambi Rajakumaran alias Ajanthan who was arrested in connection with the murder of two policemen in Vavunativu in November 2018 was released by the Batticaloa Additional Magistrate yesterday, after police found evidence linking the terror outfit led by Easter Sunday bombing mastermind Mohammed Cassim Zaharan to the crime.

After he was arrested by the CID, Zaharan’s driver confessed that the two cops had been killed by the same group behind the April 21 suicide bombings. Police later found the official revolvers assigned to the murdered police officials in the custody of suspects arrested in connection with the terror attacks.

Police spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the arrest was made when the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) obtained ‘substantial evidence’ linking Ajanthan to the murders of the policemen.

TNA leader R. Sampanthan last week bringing it to the attention of Defence Secretary General Shantha Kottegoda’s attention requested Ajanthan’s release.

In a letter he stated “I am informed that consequent to the recent bomb blasts, the arrests made and the investigations conducted reveal that two Police Constables were killed by others. If this Information is correct, the above named Kethirgamathambi Rajakumaran, alias Ajanthan should not be kept in custody any longer. Kindly look into this matter and do the needful”.After his release Ajanthan told the media that he was very happy that he is finally acquitted and able to go home. He thanked President Maithripala Sirisena for ensuring his release.

He is due to appear before the court tomorrow (13) to finalize formalities in dropping charges against him.
