Junior athletes can improve with postponement

19 May, 2019

The 23rd Junior National Athletic Championship which was to be held from May 30 to June 2 (4 days) has been indefinitely postponed due to the current situation in the country.

The Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) has now decided to conduct it from September 2 to 4 as the Sugathadasa Stadium has advanced bookings.

The best junior athletes will now have more time to prepare themselves for this meet and enhance their levels of standard. As this is the premier national competition it would serve as a trial to select the team for the Asian Junior Athletic Championship to be held in Japan next year.

Sri Lanka’s junior athletes that participated at the last edition of the biannual Asian Junior Championship managed to win the largest number of medals with three gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

It is hoped they will improve on their performances and bring more gold medals next time.
