Weight loss: Eating breakfast can help you lose weight

19 May, 2019

Breakfast is the must-have start to the day for some, whether they are looking to lose weight or not. A dietician has now revealed if those looking to slim down should eat first thing or give it a miss.

Breakfast and weight loss go hand in hand, according to diet experts, in nutrition news which may come as some reassurance to slimmers. There has long been debate about whether breaking fast is the best start to the day, and a meal which should set you up with energy to tackle everyday tasks. Some have skipped eating until lunch; particularly those who are time pressed and want to slim down. Yet nutritionists have insisted breakfast is essential for the latter group. Suzy Weems, PhD, a registered dietitian told: “Yes, you should eat breakfast.

“You can’t have Twinkies and coffee and expect to slim down, or even maintain weight loss.

“The food you choose matters.” Adding the dangers of skipping breakfast, she said: “You may be starving by lunchtime - or even earlier.

“Breakfast tends to go hand in hand with a healthy lifestyle.”

Yet what should slimmers tuck into for a healthy, start of the day, fix?

New research has insisted oatmeal can help those looking to lose weight, potentially making it an ideal start to the day..

It stated two reasons why this is so, and put: “First, it's packed with fibre and it keeps you feeling fuller longer.

“Second, a recent study in the reported that eating a breakfast made with "slow-release" carbohydrates—such as oatmeal or bran cereal three hours before you exercise may help you burn more fat.”

The data explained this is because slow release carbohydrates do not spike blood sugar like some refined carbohydrates.

It added if the benefits of oatmeal: “In turn, insulin levels don't spike as high.

“Because insulin plays a role in signalling your body to store fat, having lower blood sugar levels may help you burn fat.”

Therefore oatmeal might be a good choice, particularly for those who fancy a warm meal to start the day. Meanwhile, an egg sandwich should never be eaten for breakfast, by those wanting to slim down.
