Over a thousand civilians, security forces personnel and religious leaders gathered on the lawns of Colombo Town Hall yesterday for an Iftar gathering organised by the Sri Lanka Muslim Civil Society (SLMCS).

The traditional breaking fast during the month of Ramadhan is a harmonious event that brings families and communities together. In a communiqué, the SLMCS stated, “the open air break-fast gathering is of greater significance this year in view of the tragic events of 21/4 (Easter Sunday attacks) and the repercussions that followed.”A prayer was said in remembrance of the deceased and those affected. The event was organised to send the message that ‘fasting promotes peace, charity, compassion and better understanding’ between communities.
