Former Eastern Province Governor M.L.A.M. Hizbullah was questioned by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) in relation to the ongoing investigations on the Easter Sunday attacks, yesterday.

The ex-Governor arrived at the TID premises around 9.30 in the morning yesterday and was questioned for more than eight hours. He was also questioned by the Presidential Commission probing fraud and corruption at state institutions during the past four years.

He was accused of having connections with the banned terrorist organisation, National Thowheed Jamath and also for building a dedicated Sharia University in Kattankudy, Batticaloa with foreign funds. He later resigned from his position as the Governor of Eastern Province following massive public protest including the hunger strike of Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera.

Hizbullah was earlier questioned at the Parliamentary Select Committee where he accepted that he had met the main suspect of the attack Saharan Hashim a few years back during election time but he denied having connections with the terrorist leader, Zahran. He also said that he lost his Parliamentary seat in 2015 as Zaharan had worked against him during the election. Despite several attempts, former Eastern Governor Hizbullah was not available for comment. - RJ
