Peterites hand Isipathana third defeat with 27-21 win

Full-back turned centre Thenuka Nanayakkara scored a match winning try and converted it himself as St. Peter’s College won 27-21 to inflict on Isipathana their third defeat of the season in their inter school League rugby match at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

Nanayakkara came into the picture for his second try at a time when Isipathana led 21-20 in the second half as he crashed through the defence after the Peterites won a scrum a few metres away from touch down.

At that stage Isipathana had two of their players yellow-carded by referee Dinka Peiris and in the dying moments of the match came close to scoring but encountered some hard tackling from the Peterite cover defence.

Nanayakkara was the undisputed match winner for the Peterites as he ended the match by contributing 22 points which came off two tries, two penalties and the conversion of three tries.

Winger Ishan Fernando was the other try scorer for the Peterites after he out-ran the Isipathana defence covering forty metres on the right flank to score their first try at a time the visitors led 14-6.

The try was followed by Nanayakkara scoring his first of two tries for the Peterites to take the lead for the first time 20-14 ten minutes before half time.

Isipathana took the lead once again just before half time when Manelka Ruberu scored and converted making the scores 21-20.

Earlier in the first half Isipathana scored two tries through Manula Ratnayake and Praveen Stephan which were converted by Ruberu while Nanayakkara got the proceedings going for the Peterites when he landed penalties from difficult angles and finished the match without missing a single kick at goal.

With three minutes left and the Peterites leading 27-21 the home team surprised everyone when they opted to go in for a line-out thrown-in instead of taking the kick at goal off a penalty.

The Peterites could not make headway off the line-out ball and Isipathana went all out in the final three minutes for a try while retaining the ball as the Peterites defended resolutely.
