Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of Kurunegala Kithsiri Jayalath who is currently embroiled in the highly controversial illegal sterilization case has been appointed as the Acting DIG of Puttalam.

The appointment comes just as DIG Jayalath was summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) last week to record a statement with regard to the ongoing probe into Dr. Seigu Shihabdeen Mohamed Shafi after he was accused of sterilizing 4,000 mothers.

A senior official at the CID said that statements were recorded from the DIG and the Director of Kurunegala Teaching Hospital Dr A. M. S. Weera Bandara, who were involved in breaking the sterilization story to the media. He said the two officers were cooperating and the investigation is proceeding smoothly.

However, during a briefing Police Spokesperson said the CID has obtained a court order from the Kurunegala Magistrate requesting the assistance of Dr. Bandara.

DIG Jayalath’s appointment was approved by the National Police Commission and has been granted above his current position as the DIG of the Kurunegala Police Division with immediate effect. According to Police Spokesman, SP Ruwan Gunasekara Jayalath’s appointment among nine others was done according to service requirements.
