St. Peter’s College beat their traditional foe St. Joseph’s College 23-21 to come one step closer to pocketing the all-island inter school rugby crown at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

For the Peterites it was last season’s defeat well avenged as they played for the Fr Basil Wiratunga trophy but the win came only in the final minute of play as the pendulum swung both ways right throughout the contest.

Trailing 20-21, referee Priyantha Gunaratne penalized the Joes for not releasing the ball inside their own 22 much to the jubilation of Peterite supporters that signalled a penalty almost under the posts.

Goal-kicker Thenuka Nanayakkara executed the penalty to perfection to a thunderous applause and cheer from Peterite supporters who swarmed all over their team to celebrate the win.

At the end of the first half the Joes led 13-5 but it was a session in which the Peterites had their chances of surging ahead but were stalled in their tracks due to some poor ball handling errors while they also could not gain any ground through kicks to touch.

Joes placekicker Santhush Algama put his team in the lead early with two penalties while in-between Peterite scrum half Raveen Fernando crossed the line for an unconverted try.

But on the stroke of half time the Joes went ahead 13-5 when Algama converted a try.

Soon after the first half began the Peterites took the lead 15-13 through a penalty and a rolling maul try after which the Joes scored a pushover try to take the lead 18-13.

Peterite winger Ishan Fernando was in the act once again as he beat the Joes defence to score making it 20-18 as Nanayakkara missed the conversion.

But Algama gave the Joes the lead once again when he put over a penalty making it 21-20 before the Peterites snatched victory through their final minute penalty put over by Nanayakkara.

The Peterites are ahead in the standings of the points table but will have to wait for the outcome of the Royal College versus Joes last League match to be played on June 29.

Royal have an outside chance if they beat the Joes with more tries.
