Royal steam back to crush Isipathana

Royal displayed their fighting spirits and came back in the second half to register a convincing 19 points (3 tries, 2 conversions) to 6 (2 penalties) win over Isipathana in their second round school rugby clash at the Royal Sports Complex ground yesterday.

The first half saw Royal not playing to their full potential and allowed Isipathana to occupy their territory most of the half. This gave Isipathana 6 points through two penalties put over by Manilka Rubeyru. This was all the scoring in the first half with Royal being kept at bay through some close tackling by Isipathana.

Royal were also reduced to 13 men at one point through yellow cards.

The second half saw Royal come back strongly through their burly forwards who did the bulk of the work. They scored in the 13th minute of the second half through a forwards ploy with Rajitha Wijesuriya going over with the ball.

Dulan Gunawardena put over the conversion and Royal took a one point lead, 7-6.

Royal took play into Isipathana territory and dominated proceedings. Their forwards did well to keep possession and on working the line sent full back Lehaan Gunaratne over by the corner flag in the 32nd minute. Gunawardena did well with the conversion and Royal went further ahead, 14-6. By that time Isipathana were reduced to 12 men with referee Harintha Wiranga showing the yellow card to three players almost at short intervals.

Royal scored again at the final minute when off a three quarter move Lahiru Yomal spotted a gap and went over. The conversion was not taken but Royal led 19-6.
