Inter-club Dialog Sevens: Rugby new comers Malay CC nearly sinks Navy

New comers to inter-club rugby Malay CC almost created an upset when they matched the skills of the Navy SC ‘B’ team in a preliminary round match of the Dialog Rugby Sevens tournament held at the Race Course ground yesterday.

Malay CC scored two quick tries to be 10 points up but just before the half time Navy SC scored a try and with the conversion were behind 7-10 at half time.

However, with Navy intensifying their game they scored two more tries and with one conversion added up to 19 points. Malay CC also replied well to score one more try and with the conversion made the final scores 19-17 with Navy emerging victorious in a tense game.

The leading teams registered comfortable wins over their opponents during the first round.

One of the favourites CR & FC registered the highest score of 65 points over Galle RFC who scored nothing and are new to this format of the game.

Havelock SC also scored 62 points, the next highest score against Peterson RFC who managed only 7 points.

Police SC ‘A’, CH & FC ‘A’ and Army SC ‘B’ also scored over 50 points against their opponents.

The second day of the tournament will be played today at the same venue.
