Athletes from 500 schools to contest Games

School children in all age groups from four provinces, Uva, North Central, North Western and Eastern will be in action at 70 sporting disciplines of the Schools Games 2019 beginning tomorrow. It will serve as trials for them to qualify for the National School Games scheduled be held in the near future.

These Games will be conducted by the Provincial Education Ministries with the main sponsorship coming from Ceylon Biscuits the manufacturers of Samaposha. According to organizers children from 500 schools from these four provinces in different age categories are expected participate and the best performers are to receive medals and certificates. “Athletics is the sport that has brought glory by winning many medals for Sri Lanka. It is a fact from the age of one that a child starts to walk and run and these two acts too come under athletics which proves everyone involved in this sport even without knowing they are in the sport,” said Sunil Jayaweera the special advisor to the Minister of Education.

The schedule:

July 8-11: Uva Province at Vincent Dias Stadium.

July 11-14: North Central Province at Anuradhapura Public Stadium.

July 17-20: North Western Province at Albert F. Peiris Stadium Wennappuwa.

July 24-28: Eastern Province at Leelaratne ground Kantale
