One of Asia’s oldest golf clubs the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) will be celebrating their 130th anniversary this year and have launched a membership drive that started on July 9 to end on December 31.

Besides playing golf in one of the most picturesque courses in the world, the club offers members holiday rooms including a cottage for eight persons, a restaurant and a well-stocked library.

The membership drive also provides discounts from 25 per cent to 40 per cent with corporates to get up to 50 per cent per member.

Dialog has come in as the main sponsors for the next three years and the club hopes to get as many members as possible, specially the younger golfing enthusiasts.

Excursions to places of interest in Nuwara Eliya as well as mountain biking will be available to members according to Priyanga Hapugalle the club captain who addressed a media briefing held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club last Tuesday.

“Young golfers will get the privilege of learning or improving the skills with the coaching programs that will be available under the supervision of its resident coaching staff,” said Hapugalle.

Hapugalle also revealed that a former Wimbledon tennis champion in Frank Haddle who never went back to defend the title, lived in Sri Lanka and owned a coffee plantation in Nuwara Eliya where he also played golf.

Hapugalle said that an inter-school golf tournament will be conducted in Nuwara Eliya where the biggest golf show is played out between the NEGC and the RCGC for the Burdett Trophy annually.

Navin Pieris, head of business broadband of Dialog said that sport is a new way of building a network and that they were happy to extend their sponsorship for three years to help the sport to grow.
