Ex-Antonian and Police sportsman no more

Former St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota cricketer Asoka Ratnaweera passed away at the age of 73 years. He was a former Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Western Range).

An opening bowler and middle order batsman Ratnaweera played for the College team from 1963 to 65.

In 1965 he represented the Central Province Schools team under MTM Zarook of Trinity College at the annual inter-provincial cricket tournament.

He joined the Police in 1967 as a trainee sub-Inspector and ended up as the Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2003. He continued playing cricket, badminton and soccer for Police.

He is survived by his wife Shamalee and their two daughters Manori and Muditha and son Asanka.

His cremation will take place today at 4.00 pm at the Mahiyawa cemetery.
