Head of the Selection Committee Ashantha de Mel said that he will not be taking any chances in the two series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand which gets underway in Galle next week.

“We can’t make experiments in this New Zealand Test series and it is start of the Test Championships,” said De Mel.“We want to field the best eleven for the game although we still need to take a look at two or three players at the three-day practice game to pick the final 15.

“Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne have a big responsibility to open the innings and get the runs and if they do that Kusal Mendis and Angelo Matthews can make runs without much pressure”.

De Mel said the New Zealanders make up a very good allround side and can come up very strongly in this series and that Sri Lanka needed to balance the team. “We have the players to choose from and that’s good looking at the future. Players in the A team and Development squad have done well. In the pace department we have more options with Suranga Lakmal, Kasun Rajitha and Wishva Fernando lined up not forgetting the spinners in Akila Dhananjaya, Dhananjaya de Silva and Lasith Embuldeniya.

“All our players are talented and what they need is the confidence. We had a successful Test series in South Africa and Dimuth Karunaratne has shown good leadership qualities. There’s good unity in the dressing room,” De Mel said.
