Sri Lankan riders pitted against foreign experts at Vijayabahu

The 17th annual Vijayabahu Motocross organized by the Army Vijayabahu regiment along with the Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association will be conducted on August 25 at the Boyagane Vijayabahu Circuit.

A total of 13 events are to worked off according to the commandant of the regiment Maj. Gen. Chandana Gunawardena addressing a media conference in Colombo on Friday.

He stated that this year’s Motocross is to set a new record with the organizers being able get two foreign women, one from USA and one from Indonesia to compete.

“This will also be a first for all our motor racing fans who go in large numbers to witness the Motocross here,” said Maj Gen Gunawardena.

The day’s program will include an event for Juveniles under-10 years in the 50cc and two events for under-15 in the 65cc up to 85 cc classes.

The other events introduced for the first time are the Street Trail Bikes Modified 125cc class for Service personnel. The most important event on this day is the 250cc class events which will be contested all local Super Cross heroes who are eagerly waiting to have go against foreign riders. Already two Thai riders and a Japanese have confirmed their participation.

Last year’s Champion rider Ishan Dassanayake who hails from the same area, will have to face stiff challenges.

The late Ananda Wedisinghe was the first to win the Vijayabahu Motocross way back in 2000 and won it for the second time in 2006. Gayan Sandaruwan was the man who halted the winning streak of Wedasinghe beating him twice in 2005/6.
