Anjalika Kurera emerged the women’s Singles champion at the 104th National Tennis tournament when she easily defeated Janali Manamperi in straight sets in the final played at the SLTA courts at Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha yesterday.

The 15-year-old girl from Ave Maria Convent Negombo, Anjalica played impressively and without errors to overwhelm Manamperi 6-1, 6-0. The final that took just over one hour saw Janali lose points through unforced errors. She had little answers to the power and accurate placements by Anjalika. Anjalika is also in the women’s Doubles final and is easily showing signs of becoming a champion to stay for a long time.

Top seed Ranjan Dharmasena clinched the men’s wheelchair Singles title when he beat Suresh Ranaweera in a hard fought three setter in the final.

Dharmasena took the first set on 6-1 but it was not easy as Ranaweera fought back and took the second set on 6-4 with some accurate shots that saw Dharmasena in difficulty to return.

The third and deciding set saw the game swing either way with Ranaweera playing some well placed shots and Dharmasena too returning with accuracy.

Dharmasena took the third set on 6-2 with his ability to get to the spot in time to play the return shots.
