MCA Cricket tournament starts August 30, attracts 66 teams

A total of 66 teams are down to participate in the six-a-side cricket tournament to be conducted by the Mercantile Cricket Association (MCA) to be held from August 30 to September 1 at two venues.

The tournament will be sponsored for the third consecutive year by Citizens Development Business Finance and played for their Challenge Trophy.

There will be 18 teams in Tier ‘A’ while 48 teams will field in Tier ‘B’. The tier ‘A’ segment will include teams playing in the MCA ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ divisions and will play on turf pitches. Team in tier ‘B’ will play on matting pitches.

These details were disclosed at a media briefing held at the MCA pavilion on Thursday.

Vice President of the MCA Nalin Wickremasinghe said that this tournament was conducted for the past 30 years was held over two days and with the sponsorship from Citizens Development Business Finance the tournament will now be held over three days.

Cash awards and trophies will be presented to the winners and special awards to the best batsman, best bowler, batsman with the most number of sixes, man of the match and man of the tournament.

By conducting such tournaments the MCA was able to produce players of high standard and be selected to the national team.
