Niluka Karunaratne Sri Lanka’s leading badminton player who took part in the BWF World Championship in Basel, Switzerland lost in the first round to Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in straight sets early last week.
Karunaratne is participating in this tournament in a bid to qualify for the Olympic Games to be held in Japan next year. However, he lost to the 15th seeded player and offered some resistance before going down in straight sets, 18-21, 12-21. More than 20 countries are represented in this championship.
The vastly experienced Karunaratne will have to perform much better than this and obtain the necessary number of points if he wishes to qualify. (TBR)
