The Hisham Abdeen Rugby Football Academy (HARFA) held its annual inter-academy rugby tournament at the Race Course ground in Colombo last Sunday and there were players of all ages and sizes from Under-8 to Under 21 with teams turning up from as far as Polonnaruwa and Monaragala.

It also did not matter about identifying the players in the fray or who they are as the rugby carnival was played not to produce winners and losers but to showcase the enthusiasm and talent in Sri Lanka that could be unearthed and put to proper use.

One man, the former Sri Lanka rugby great Hisham Abdeen, has taken it upon himself to make his contribution to the sport in the country even in retirement which he has been doing for the past ten years since he started his Academy called HARFA.

Over 1200 players have learnt the basics of rugby at HARFA and several of them have gone on to enlist in leading rugby playing schools in the country. Four players have also worn the Sri Lanka jersey that includes the former S. Thomas’ College player Naveen Henakankanamge.
