Ex-Pakistan cricket great Javad Miandad has lashed out at a section of the Sri Lanka team fraternity for their boycott of the upcoming T20 and ODI series in his country starting on September 27.

“International matches should be the top priority for the players and SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) should penalise the ones who have opted out of the Pakistan series,” Miandad was quoted as telling the Dawn newspaper in Pakistan.

Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Perera are among nine Sri Lanka players who have made themselves unavailable for the tour on the grounds of insecurity despite assurances of security fit for heads-of-state by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Miandad also called on the Pakistan players selected for the series to produce their best.

“It does not matter which Sri Lankan players visit and Pakistan must only look to put up their best performances regardless of the visitors’ squad quality,” Miandad was further quoted as saying.

Dasun Shanaka and Lahiru Thirimanne have been appointed as the new captains of the Sri Lanka T20 and ODI teams respectively.

Dhanushka Gunathilaka, Avishka Fernando, Oshada Fernando, Angelo Perera, Isuru Udana, Lakshan Sandakan, Nuwan Pradeep, Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara are the other front-line players who have stayed loyal to the Sri Lanka team.
