President should take final decision on alliance – SLFP Central Committee

The Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party that concluded its meeting late last night decided that President Maithripala Sirisena should take the final decision about its alliance in the upcoming presidential election.

Speaking to Sunday Observer General Secretary of SLFP, Dayasiri Jayasekara told that the Central Committee decided to allow President to make the final call which will be announced at 11 a.m today.

During the course of the week representatives of the party met with both leading candidates Sajith Premadasa of the Democratic National Front (DNF) as well as the Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) Candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Spokesperson for Gotabaya Rajapaksa MP, Dullas Alahapperuma said that the two parties will sign the MOU this Wednesday (9) as agreed between the two party leaderships.

“The coalition will be made under the name of Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Sandhanaya. We have decided on a different symbol but that will only come into play at the General Election. ,” Alahapperuma told Sunday Observer.

Former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa made a deposit under this party name last Friday.

Earlier in the day yesterday speaking to media Dallas Alahaperuma told media that they agreed to the 20 proposals in the MOU, unanimously.

“ There were another 17 proposals forwarded to Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He has conveyed his agreement to all the proposals without a single amendment,” Alahapperuma said.

Meanwhile SLFP Stalwart MP Kumara Welgama said that he will not support any alliance between SLFP and SLPP. He is to make a final decision tomorrow following the announcement by his party about the alliance.
