SL ‘A’ has a case to consider in Nipun Dananjaya

6 October, 2019

Progressing from inexperienced to experienced, Nipun Dananjaya is progressing fast to make the grade as an all rounder. His most recent track record (SL U-19) justifies the progress he has made.

The product from St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, won big, clinching the “best fielder” award, under the National Category. In person, he is of decent height, and moves lightly like that of a veteran athlete.

His performances and that of the Sri Lanka U-19 team contributed largely towards the team entering the semi-finals in the Asia Cup Under-19 tournament. In the final the weather gods turned unkind. However, his unit had the potential to be crowned as champs in their own backyard.

In the three outings, at the aforementioned tournament, the skipper notched up 114, at an average of 38.

Nipun, seems to be a man-of-few-words and many deeds in the making.

“It’s a good award, particularly, the best fielder hence, I’m happy about it,” Nipun kept it short-and-sweet.

Though, one door closed at the U-19 cup, another door (best fielding) was welcomed with both hands. He disclosed, this is the first time he was being named as the best fielder.

“Before this I have won the best batsman and best bowler awards. I need to continue this trend. Should go for more awards against my name,” he shared.

“Actually, we are still improving. We need to go higher in our dreams. We need to practice to up the level of our skills,” said the leader of the pack.

“Playing in the U-19 team is only the first step to attain higher places,” said Dananjaya who has set the bar high for him to reach.

His next target would be to go into the ‘A’ team and his qualification should suffice. Being the best fielder a good leader and a capable batsman should get him there.

“Actually, I like to get these award. Need to perform well and repeat,” he concludes. (PS)
