Elpitiya fired first salvo - MR

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa celebrated their ‘resounding victory’ at Elpitiya Pradesheeya Sabha elections.

Issuing a media release, he stated that the Yahapalanya era should be brought to an end, and for that ‘the people of Elpitiya have fired the first salvo’.

He said they have formed an alliance (Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Sri Lanka Freedom Party and Joint Opposition’s political parties) ‘to ensure the victory of one candidate at the presidential elections’.

“The people of Elpitiya have with great foresight and integrity, conclusively defeated the attempt made by the government to retain power by deceiving the people through the distribution of land, jobs and all manner of material inducements,” he added.

However, also speaking to the media prior to the election, the former president said the Elpitiya PS election results weren’t as significant. At the time, responding to a question raised by a media person if the result of the Presidential Elections would start from Elpitiya, Rajapaksa said, “Let’s see. We can’t decide from Elpitiya. Elpitiya is a small Pradesheeya Sabha”.

Meanwhile, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said the election results of the Elpitiya elections do not reflect the possible results of the upcoming Presidential election. According to Herath, despite efforts by certain MP’s to equate the Pradeshiya Sabha polls to a national level election, a village-level small scale election does not compare to a national election, such as the Presidential poll.

The MP’s made this statement attending a press briefing at the JVP part headquarters on Friday in response to a question posed by media personnel. While the Elpitiya election was dominated by the Sri Lanka Podujana Permuna which won 10 seats, attending an event in Pannala Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday said the Elitiya results reflect the result the party will obtain at the upcoming Presidential polls.
