Commission to regulate govt policies, projects

20 October, 2019

An independent commission will be established to evaluate and regulate the policies approved by Parliament, projects implemented through budgetary allocations and development projects run with public funds.

A Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) has been appointed to study the formation of the Independent Commission and to submit its recommendations for the preparation of the Bill ensuring the national evaluation capacity of Sri Lanka.

The Chairman of the Committee, Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri said that the committee had completed 80 percent of the work in drafting the Bill and the Cabinet approval will be sought soon.

The proposed act will empower the Commission to obtain and evaluate information from any institution. The Deputy Speaker said it is essential that the Commission should be an independent body as it has to conduct pre and post evaluations.

The Deputy Speaker said that the Commission will be tasked with making recommendations regarding the productivity of the policies set forth by Parliament and the projects implemented with the funds allocated by Parliament.
