The Attorney General’s Department is yet to instruct the Police on the case relating to a Chinese female who had allegedly suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a former Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Southern provincial councillor. Police Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekara said the Police has submitted the relevant files to the AG’s Department to obtain instructions of the Attorney General on the matter. Reliable sources from the Police claimed AG’s instructions have been sought due to difficulties that have arisen in relation to the case during investigations.
“We are now awaiting instructions to take the necessary steps,” he said. According to him the Senior DIG of the Southern Province, Roshan Fernando has been asked to submit a report on the matter as well.
Earlier this week a 38-year old Chinese national uploaded a video on social media in which she claimed that former SLPP Southern Provincial Councillor Krishantha Puspakumara alias ‘Rattaran’ and his driver had gang raped her. She also accused the local Police of failing to arrest the suspects in violation of a court order.
“I lodged a complaint on May 3, 2019. I have waited for almost five months now but the Galle Police did not take proper action. They did not arrest the suspects and produce them before the courts.” she claimed in the released video.
The victim also recalled how Pushpakumara said he could influence the Police with his power. She has also accused another Provincial Councilor Asintha Kaushalya, purportedly a cousin of Pushpakumara of harassing and intimidating her following the incident.
She had initially met Pushpakumara in August 2018 when she approached him for help in resolving a dispute after she was cheated of money by an individual. Having being evicted from the place she was residing in at the time, the victim has claimed that Pushpakumara had then offered her lodging at his residence. According to her the sexual abuse had begun on the very day she had moved in and had worsened between February - April 2019 when she was allegedly gang raped. The victim has claimed that she delayed to complain till May in fear of Pushpakumara.
She has alleged that despite three calling dates have passed and the Galle Magistrate’s Courts issuing an order to arrest the suspects and produce them before the courts the Galle Police has yet failed to do as ordered. She also accused Police top brass of inaction.
In February this year Pushpakumara was arrested by the Akmeemana Police over child abuse allegations.
He was accused of allegedly abusing a 16-year-old girl at a devalaya belonging to the suspect in Akmeemana. In the complaint lodged by the victim on February 28, she accused Pushpakumara of molesting her on February 23 at the Devalaya premises.
Pushpakumara later on surrendered to the Police on February 28 and produced before Galle Magistrate Courts where he got released by a Rs. 25,000 bail and two surety bails. However on March 18 Pushpakumara resigned from the Southern Provincial Council claiming he decided to step down due to severe criticism following alleged claims of sexual abuse of a minor.
