Sri Lanka finished 39th in the medals table from among 140 countries at the World Military Games held in China.

China as the host had a commanding lead in the medal standings with a total of 239 medals, including 133 golds, 64 silvers and 42 bronze becoming the first country to clinch over 100 golds in a single edition.

Sri Lankan athletes Nimali Liyanaarachchi, Sumedha Ranasinghe and Nadeeka Lakmali won silver and bronze medals in the middle distance and javelin events respectively.

Russia which had ranked first in the medals table on five of the previous editions, had 161 medals overall with 51 golds, 53 silvers and 57 bronze to stand in second while Brazil was ranked third with 88 medals (21 golds, 31 silvers, 36 bronze).

From the South Asian region, only India and Sri Lanka won medals. India was 27th in the table after winning a gold medal along with a bronze.

In the previous Games held in South Korea last year, Sri Lanka won only a bronze in the 4x100m Men’s relay.
