10 November, 2019

The Dota2 team and Lanka Lions from Phoenix Gaming were engaged in a heated competition to vie for their right to represent the island in South Korea and emerged victorious after defeating teams such as Victorious Secret and Origin Unknown from Xiphos Esports at the National Championship concluded recently in Colombo.

The Ministry of Sports in Sri Lanka declared Esports as an official sport in the country and Sri Lanka has become the first South Asian nation to officially recognize esports.

This is the first tournament conducted after the recognition by the Ministry of Sports. The 11th International Esports Federation (IESF) World Championship is due to take place from December 11 to 15 in Seoul, South Korea and Sri Lanka will be participating for the first time.

The Sri Lanka Esports Association was the first in South Asia to conduct the tournament according to international standards.

The players as well as representatives from Sri Lanka will travel to Seoul in December to try their best and put Sri Lanka on the map in the ever-evolving Esports scene. The recently concluded qualifying round for the Esports Championship saw a record number of over 150 schools from across the country taking part. The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC) had already endorsed Esports in Sri Lanka with their show of support for Sri Lanka’s participation in the 18th Asian Games, where Esports was included as a demonstration sport.
