Sampanthan denies endorsing Sajith for opposition leader

24 November, 2019

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sampanthan denied media reports that he is endorsing MP Sajith Premadasa for the opposition leader post.

“I did not make any such statement. It is a matter entirely for the United National Party (UNP). I did not make any such statement to anyone,” he said to the Sunday Observer, yesterday.

The former opposition leader said the verdict presents an explicit picture of the elections.

The verdict has been delivered by every single district in the North-East.

“We are expecting the Cabinet to respond to this verdict. We are expecting the President too to respond to that, in due course,” he said of the election results.

Asked as to what the stance of his party is in the aftermath of the election, Sampanthan hoped to work together with the Government.

“We are all hoping to be able to work together. To find a final solution for the national question at the earliest possible opportunity.

“The President is busy with a number of urgent matters now. He has been invited and is going to India. We’ll wait for a couple of days and see. After all, it’s only one-week since the election took place. The verdict of the people is known to the President and to the whole world,” he said.
