SLFP targets General Elections

24 November, 2019

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has appointed a committee headed by its Acting Chairman Prof Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa to obtain nominations from prospective candidates, targeting the General Elections next year, the Sunday Observer learns.

The Chairman of the SLFP said the party is currently reviewing its ground level organizers in order to strengthen the party.

“We will appoint organizers to the vacant places soon. At the same time we have to select the best candidates to contest the upcoming General Election” Prof Piyadasa said.

Earlier, the SLFP decided to sack its electoral and district organizers who extended support to the New Democratic Front (NDF) Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa. Asked about future action the Chairman said that temporary appointees to organizer posts have proven their capabilities by winning their seats.

“We won most of our seats including Attanagalle at the Presidential election. It proved that our temporary organizers are capable of their roles” Prof Piyadasa said.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the SLFP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara told the media yesterday that the Party will decide soon about potential disciplinary actions against all SLFP members who went against party decision at the Presidential polls.

As decided, the SLFP would contest at the next Parliamentary election under ‘Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Sandhanaya’ the coalition built up with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Prof Piyadasa confirmed.
