Thurz-Deyz at Basico: adding quality to the open-mic culture

24 November, 2019

Music from Open Mics in Colombo during the past few years have gone from Interesting to Boring as many individuals skip preparation and now settle for “a good time.”

However, Thurz-Deyz at Basico is out to elevate the mainstream open mic events in Colombo in a much needed shake up!

Thurz-Deyz is an open platform for up and coming musicians who have not yet been discovered or individuals looking for their sound. It is held every Thursday at Basico, Hilton Colombo Residencies, Union Place.

Thurz-Deyz at Basico is organised by Acoustic Culture and is looking to up the ante by focusing on quality rather than quantity and differentiate themselves from the regular open platforms in Colombo.

The host for the month of December, Dellon Juriansz, spoke of the calibre of artistes that perform week in and week out and expressed his excitement at their levels of skill.

Dellon also spoke of the large gatherings and big numbers of artistes flooding in which is the only issue (a good type) they have had to face.

The event also works as a ‘talent search’. The most common thing in any open platform is abundance, so how do you filter out the occasional singer or the less prepared and siphon in the groomed and potential artiste is always the question. The idea is to bring out fresh faces that are more than ideal to work (collaborate) with artistes who bring out a fresh take on music. Like Neil Patrick Harris says, New is always better.

The event also aims to rejuvenate the masses on a Thursday night and give their audiences a fun and exciting time whilst also focusing on the skill and quality of the performers.

Speaking on an interesting incident, Dellon said, “last Thursday, while I was hosting, there was a gentleman from Louisiana who loved the music at the event. He came up to us and admired every musician and everything that was performed on the night. He also mentioned that most of the music was forgotten back in America and that it was nice to listen to the music that he grew up on and said how that was proper music and so on.

He loved it a lot and coincidentally was a musician himself who plays the Harmonica and ended up jamming with us and we did around 3 songs, some blues hits and it was amazing. People can surprise you there!”

The upcoming month of December is being planned and the organisers are looking to set up for a special month of music in line with Christmas. Basico also introduces special deals which are unique for the Thursday night special (Thurz-Deyz).

Those looking to perform should look for the Acoustic Culture page or @dellonjay on Instagram and drop a text to get a shot at performing and improving your skills.

In an open mic night filled Colombo that does not focus on raw talent, it is definitely refreshing to see an event as such. Thumbs up!
