Magic is something that always takes us to a whole new world and fired our imagination. And when it comes to magic, the story Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling is unforgettable.

Recently, a team of undergraduates from the Robotics and Intelligence Systems (RIS) Laboratory at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, brought Harry Potters’ Sorting Hat to life.

As a result, the team has been selected as a Global Finalist at the Eleventh – International Conference on Social Robotics 2019 – Robot Design competition.

Students of Computer Science of the Faculty of Applied Science of Sri Jayewardenepura University won the first place at the Robotic Competition which was held recently.

They won the ‘Sorting Hat’ of the famous Harry Potter series.

This Hat, which was designed and developed by the undergraduates, could not only read the mind and put the students into houses but it could also analyse brain activity for various other medical and scientific purposes.

Adhisha Gammanpila, Asela Wijesinghe, Tehani Wanniarachchi, Viraji Amarajeewa, and Dovini Jayasinghe were the team members.

The team is very grateful to the supervisor of this project, the Director at the Robotics and Intelligence Systems Laboratory (RIS) and a Senior lecturer at the Department of Computer Science University of Sri Jayewardenepura Dr. Ravindra Silva and Udaka Manawadu who is a research assistant at the above laboratory.

The team also expressed their gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Prof. Laleen Karunanayake, the Head of the Department of Computer Science.
