Ashan and Jacques bag awards for best driver and rider

The Hutch Super Series 2019 winners were awarded their Trophies at a gala ceremony held at the Eagle Lakeside at Attidiya last Tuesday.

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Major General Kamal Gunaratne attended the ceremony as the chief guest who gave away the main awards to the winners of the Championship events. There were five championship awards presented on this day.

The two major event winners in the cars category Ashan Silva received the Best Driver’s Trophy on offer for the Hutch Super Series 2019. It was a comfortable victory for him when he recorded back to back victories at the final Colombo Supercross held two weeks ago at the Naval Base Circuit in Welisara.

In the two-wheeler class it was none other than Jacques Goonewardene who carried away the main award as the Champion in the Hutch Trophy Super Series 2019. Goonewardena participating in almost all Supercross events got to the front ahead of his biggest challengers Evon Gurusinghe and Sasmmera Premaratne.

The other championship winners who received awards for car events at the ceremony were Mihan Peiris in the 1300cc Ford Laser/Mazda and Malika Kuruwitaarachchi in the Group SL N Ford Laser/Mazda 1500cc class.

Young Kesara Godage was awarded the Best Junior Rider’s award for his superlative achievements during the 2019 season in the Group J MX motorcycles Over 65cc up to 85cc (2/T) and up to 150cc (4/T) under 15 years. Kesara also competed as a driver in the lower classes and recorded a few notable wins.

Deshan Solanki the young rider handling his Group SM Supermoto Motor Cycle 125cc up to 500cc (2/T) and 249cc up to 750cc (4/) received the Best Rider award in this class.

Ashan Silva after receiving the award noted that it was his fourth successive national title and the second of the Hutch Super Series which commenced only last year.

Ashan also said that he achieved the best in Sri Lanka and hopes to continue racing for many more years and enter the international racing scene.

Jacques said that he was happy to be the winner for the first time and be the national champion for the year 2019.

Adding further he said that he won a championship as a junior rider at the age of 15 and came back to track after a lapse of a few years and winning it marked great success for him. He thanked his parents for lending the fullest support during the season.

Rodney Mason the founder of SLARDAR 37 years ago who took great pains in promoting the sport in the country was awarded the Once in a Lifetime Award for his immeasurable services rendered to the club as well as for motor racing.

President of SLARADR Kamil Hussain addressing the gathering thanked the main sponsor of the Hutch Super Series which was inaugurated last year.
