The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) thank the Government for withdrawing the proposed Counter Terrorism Bill brought in by the previous regime, GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge saidaddressing the media at the GMOA Head Quarters in Colombo on Friday.
He said that there are two more Bills that should be withdrawn such as the proposed Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) agreement and the proposed Bill on quality assurance and accreditation in higher education 2019.
GMOA Media Spokesman Dr. Samantha Ananda said that the proposed Terrorism Prevention Act was aimed at freeing the real terrorists while suppressing journalists, trade unionists and student and civil activists.
That is why there were several protests launched against it.
GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Navin De Zoysa said that through the ETCA agreement the previous regime tried to open up the Sri Lankan job market to India and foreign countries undermining opportunities for local professionals.
It was also expected through the move to fill job vacancies in Sri Lanka by cheap foreign labour.
Through the proposed Bill on quality assurance and accreditation in higher education 2019, it was aimed at abolishing State institutions such as the University Grants Commission and Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) and replace them with a new body that comprises political henchmen.
