5 January, 2020

Cabinet approval has been granted to set up a National Centre for Designing Computer-based Teaching e-learning Resources at Pitipana, Homagama with financial assistance from Korea, Information and Communication Technology, Higher Education, Technology and Innovations and Co-Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardana said.

He told the the weekly cabinet press briefing at the Government Information Department Auditorium in Colombo on Friday that the centre was originally planned to set up in the current location considering facts, such as accessibility for the people and possibility of easy linking to other institutions. However, it had been planned to be shifted to Narangallawatta, Kuliyapitiya West Divisional Secretariat in the Kurunegala District for political advantage by a former Education Minister.

Pitipana was selected because the area has the Telecom National Data Centre, Technological faculties of Moratuwa, Sri jayawardenepura and Colombo Universities, Mahinda Rajapaksa Vidyalaya, the largest secondary school in South Asia, the only Nano Park in Sri Lanka and Green University. The proposed Centre would be benefited from those institutions, especially the Telecom National Data Centre.
