Light Infantry troopers shine at Para Games

Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) soldiers were adjudged overall champions at the 22nd Army Para Games concluded recently at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

SLLI won 64 golds, 45 silvers and 23 bronze medals to take the championships while Gajaba Regiment (GR) and Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) emerged second and third runners-up respectively.

Gajaba won 32 golds, 28 silvers and 26 bronze while VIR collected 19 golds, 21 silvers and 20 bronze to finish in third place.

Apart from athletics other sports contested were basketball, badminton, cycling, wheelchair marathon, archery, weight lifting, volleyball, bolleyball (sitting), beach volleyball, table tennis, cricket, swimming, wheelchair tennis and shooting.

Meanwhile, Commando Regiment’s sergeant CNB Indrapala was adjudged the best athlete of the year while the best athlete of the Games award was won by MVT Dhananjaya of SLLI.

Army Para athletes who performed well at the Games signalled high expectations for future international meets. During the last Asian Para Games Sri Lanka won 14 medals and most of the medal winners represented the Army.

Sports Ministry Secretary KDS Ruwanchandra was the chief guest while the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva was the guest of honour at the awards ceremony which was held after the three day event.

The event was organised by the Army Para Games Committee at the Sugatadasa Stadium.
