Random doping tests are to be conducted on players contesting the on-going Dialog league rugby tournament from next week following a revelation that Sri Lanka and Kandy SC fullback Thilina Wijesinghe had been tested positive.

Wijesinghe, according to the director general of the Sri Lanka Anti Doping Agency (SLADA) Dr. Seevali Jayawickrema, was tested five months ago before the start of the league in November 2019 while preparing for an international match.

“We have so far not conducted any tests on players during the current League and will be testing them (in the Dialog league) from next week,” said Dr. Jayawickrema.

He said that Wijesinghe has the right to appeal to a Special Committee although he has been held back from playing any further part in the on-going tournament. Kandy SC are the current defending champions of the League and are aiming for a 21st title.

Wijesinghe is one of the frontline members of the Kandy SC team.

It is now likely that Kandy SC will be the subject of curiosity during the current league but club officials deny any cheating on their part to retain the title.

“He (Wijesinghe) was tested more than five months ago during a Sri Lanka team practice session but SLR (Sri Lanka Rugby) had officially announced the test result two weeks ago and our rivals are now attempting to brand us in the league through jealousy.

“We have always followed WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) and World Rugby regulations,” Kandy SC’s manager Kapila Silva told the Sunday Observer.

Wijesinghe is one of the leading place-kicking point scorers in the current tournament inclusive of two tries, second only to CR and FC’s Riza Mubarak who has 48 points.
